Ryuko Matoi is a girl who roams around with half of a red blade, searching for the other half held by the person who killed her father. She arrives at Honnouji Academy, a high school ruled by the terrifying student council president, Satsuki Kiryouin, who uses the school council uniform to crush anyone who stands in her way. After being defeated by Satsuki, Ryuko meets Senketsu, who wears a school uniform that grants her special abilities. Teaming up with Senketsu, Ryuko begins her fight to free Honnouji Academy from Satsuki and the council's dominance while uncovering the truths behind her father's death.
