The Ku family lives during the Republic of China era (1930s) as a prestigious household in a wealthy part of Nanjing. Soon, news spreads that the city is being overtaken by Imperial Japanese forces. The Ku family - consisting of all daughters and parents in declining health - is soon compelled to pack their belongings and leave the war-torn area. One of their servants suggests they relocate to the countryside. To their dismay, life proves to be incredibly challenging, and they find themselves in poverty. The family is fragmented as each daughter faces numerous hardships in the rural setting. However, all family members ultimately grow closer as they work together in the countryside.
