The 1930s in Hong Kong is a time of cultural shock between East and West. Women begin to fight for their rights and status, challenging the notion of 'men being superior to women.' The renowned barrister Sir Arthur Chung, who studied in England and lives a British lifestyle, is actually a traditional Chinese man at heart. He marries several wives to showcase his power and upper-class status. His first wife, Koo Sam-lan, is a wealthy girl; his second wife is Aisin Gioro Yee-yin, a former princess of the Qing dynasty; the third wife, Yvonne Yik, comes from a banking family; the fourth wife, Hong Tsz-kwan, is a famous Peking opera singer; and the fifth wife, Chui Dan-dan, is a woman obsessed with vanity. As a strict and authoritarian father, Sir Arthur Chung faces rebellion from his two sons, Charles and Jimmy. Though this affluent and prominent family appears warm on the outside, they are, in reality, fragmented and disunited.
