Sakazaki Iwane is a ronin who spends his days idly in Edo. Until a few months ago, he was the promising son and heir of a powerful family in Bungo. After a tragedy struck in their home domain—where both of his two best friends died, one at Iwane's hand by order of the domain lord's chief retainer—he returned to Edo, where he had previously trained in swordplay with them. Iwane left his home for Edo, abandoning his fiancée, the sister of the friend he killed. Eventually, Iwane uncovers the conspiracy behind the deaths of his two friends and struggles to reform his domain.
