The story is set in 1914 in Breisford, Wisconsin, near Lake Koshgonong. One spring day, little Sterling finds a raccoon cub in the forest whose mother has just been killed by a hunter. He decides to care for him and names him Rascal. From that day on, the boy and the raccoon become inseparable friends, although Sterling soon realizes, after a series of small disasters caused by Rascal in the neighbors' gardens, that cohabitation between humans and wild animals can sometimes be very challenging. Thus begins the last unforgettable year of Sterling's childhood, filled with small and big adventures alongside his beloved animal friends, Rascal, Oscar, and Alice, but marked by the death of his mother and the financial ruin of his father, who lost almost everything to repay debts.
