The Samurai is a Japanese historical fiction television series produced by Senkosha Productions in the early 1960s. Its original Japanese title was Onmitsu Kenshi. The series premiered in 1962 on TBS and ran continuously until 1965, featuring ten self-contained story arcs, typically consisting of 13 episodes each. Additionally, two black-and-white feature films were created by Toei Company in 1964, produced by the same crew that made the TV series, along with a stage show. The Samurai achieved significant success despite its initially limited budget. It was the first Japanese TV program ever broadcast in Australia, premiering there in 1964 and quickly gaining a remarkably large fan base among the local youth, rapidly becoming a cult favorite. Despite its immense popularity in Australia and success in Japan, New Zealand, and the Philippines, the series was not widely aired elsewhere, and its fame remains largely confined to those countries.
