The show was designed to compete with programming on West German television. It was fairly successful, even gaining a following in parts of West Germany that could receive Eastern TV. Its production quality was high. In addition to song and dance numbers and appearances by East German celebrities, nearly every broadcast featured well-known stars from the west, often after their popularity had peaked in their home countries.
