TV reporter Wei Haiyi (played by Maggie Shao) interviews residents of the cage houses where the urban poor live, and meets the young Ma Zhongbao (Wen Zhaolun). Zhongbao has grown up in a cage house since childhood, indulging in reading all day long, resulting in an extremely introverted personality. After the interview, Haiyi inadvertently takes Zhongbao's novel 'Frog and Scorpion,' and is deeply moved by Zhongbao's poignant pursuit. The highly respected lawyer and lawmaker Cham Yourong (Luo Yingjun) is the underground lover of Haiyi's mother, Wei Jinling (Miao Jinfeng), but he intends to invade Haiyi's life, leading to a hasty confrontation where Haiyi kills him. The mercenary Jin Ling accepts a huge bribe from Rong's wife and even testifies against her daughter in court.
