The 36th NHK Taiga Drama is Mori Motonari. This series tells the story of Mori Motonari, a warlord from the early 1500s who was at the forefront of the Warring States period. Every Japanese school textbook includes the Mitsuya no kyokun, Mori's famous lesson to his three sons, which teaches that while a single arrow can be easily broken, three arrows together are unbreakable. In 1997, 500 years after his birth, NHK dramatizes Motonari's rise from a chief of the Aki region (now Hiroshima) to a daimyo ruling over ten provinces in the Chugoku region. At the time Oda Nobunaga and Takeda Shingen emerged, Motonari was 64 years old and already the head of a powerful dynasty. Even after his death, the Mori family played a significant role in Japanese history. His grandson Terumoto became a loyal vassal of Toyotomi. After being defeated at the Battle of Sekigahara, Ieyasu confiscated most of his lands, leaving him only with Suwo and Nagato, later known as Choshu. However, 260 years later, the Mori achieved their ultimate revenge, leading the imperial forces against the Tokugawa during the Meiji Restoration.
