Brasil República, 1918. Luís Jerônimo is a wealthy young man. A notorious womanizer, he spends his nights out drinking and having fun with prostitutes, until he discovers he has an injury to his right lung. Following the advice of his doctor, Edmundo Esteves, he decides to spend some time at a cousin's farm in the small town of Vila da Mata in Espírito Santo, seeking fresh air to prevent the illness from progressing to tuberculosis.
