Jonathan Ames, a young writer from Brooklyn, feels adrift. He has just gone through a painful breakup, partly due to his drinking, is struggling to write his second novel, and spends too much time partying with his magazine editor. Rather than confront reality, Jonathan escapes into his fantasies — taking on the role of a private detective — because he yearns to be a hero and a man of action.
