Jamie Mills

Jamie Mills is a British gaffer and chief lighting technician. Mills was born in Harrow and educated at Park High School and City of Westminster College. He began his career in the lighting department at 17 in 1993, starting as an apprentice electrician with the lighting company Lee Lighting. His early years were spent working as a floor electrician, primarily in television, where he developed a strong technical foundation before moving into film work. As his career progressed, Mills spent many years working closely with established gaffer Perry Evans, assisting on major features and frequently operating as his lead assistant or overseeing additional and second-unit work. This extended period of mentorship and on-set experience prepared Mills for taking on full gaffer and chief lighting technician responsibilities on his own projects. His credits include serving as Chief Lighting Technician on The Batman (2022) and as a gaffer on Dune (2021). Other notable film credits include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Ready Player One (2018), Mary Magdalene (2018), and The King (2019). He places significant value on preparation, close collaboration with directors of photography, and maintaining a strong, reliable crew. Building long-term working relationships, including with trusted members of his lighting team, is central to his approach to working on complex productions. Mills has also acknowledged the rapid evolution of lighting technology in the film industry, particularly the increased use of LED lighting and LED volumes, and has emphasised the need for lighting technicians to continually update their technical knowledge to meet the demands of modern filmmaking.
