World on Fire is a historical drama series that aired on BBC in 2019 and was unfortunately canceled after two seasons. Starring Jonah Hauer-King from The Little Mermaid, the series presents shocking and often heartbreaking storylines from the early days of World War II. With an overall score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, the impressive 100% rating for the second season showcases how highly this production was praised by critics.
Set in the early days of the war, World on Fire follows the fates of ordinary people in England, Poland, France, Germany, and other countries, illustrating the war's impact on their daily lives. The character Harry Chase, played by Jonah Hauer-King, is a British translator working in Warsaw when the war begins. Alongside Chase's complicated love life, the series also depicts his enlistment as a soldier and subsequent rise in military intelligence. Other key characters include Polish waitress Kasia Tomaszeski (Zofia Wichłacz) and those who join the Polish resistance against the Nazi occupation, as well as American journalist Nancy Campbell (Helen Hunt), who risks her life to expose Nazi propaganda and realities in Berlin.
World on Fire paints a picture of how the war affected people through its interconnected stories, shedding light on lesser-known and overlooked moments of the conflict. These moments include the Battle of Danzig in Poland and the Battle of River Plate near Uruguay. The second season begins with the chaotic days of October 1940. This time, viewers see how the Great War came to England and how Harry and other pilots revved their engines to defend the skies over Manchester.
Created by Peter Bowker, the series features a talented cast alongside the lead actors, including Lesley Manville, Sean Bean, Eryk Biedunkiewicz, Julia Brown, Yrsa Daley-Ward, and Parker Sawyers. This ensemble vividly brings the various faces and perspectives of war to the screen.
Despite being one of the most successful productions about World War II, World on Fire has not gained enough recognition worldwide. However, the high critical scores it received during its two-season run and the immense quality of storytelling prove that this series is one of the most ambitious war dramas in television history.
