Woody Harrelson Returns to Sarajevo as an Honored Guest After 29 Years
Woody Harrelson's return to Sarajevo carries more significance than just a lifetime achievement award ceremony.
The American actor will visit the city again as an honored guest, 29 years after starring in Michael Winterbottom's film Welcome to Sarajevo, which depicted the Bosnian War through the eyes of journalists. Harrelson will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award at the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival, taking place from August 14-21.
Welcome to Sarajevo to be Screened Again
As part of the award program, the festival will reunite audiences with Welcome to Sarajevo. The film was also screened at the third Sarajevo Film Festival following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997.
Based on Michael Nicholson's book Natasha's Story, the film follows foreign correspondents working in besieged Sarajevo. Harrelson portrays American journalist Jimmy Flynn, who comes to the war zone in pursuit of news; the cast also includes Stephen Dillane, Marisa Tomei, Kerry Fox, and Goran Višnjić.
This new screening does not merely include the film as a selected work from Harrelson's career. It brings the actor back to one of the biggest cultural events in the city he depicted in cinema nearly 30 years ago.
Festival Honors Four Decades of Career
The Honorary Heart of Sarajevo will be presented to Harrelson for his contributions to the film industry and his acting career.
Harrelson has been nominated for an Oscar three times for his performances in The People vs. Larry Flynt, The Messenger, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The festival also highlighted the actor's roles in diverse productions such as Natural Born Killers, No Country for Old Men, Zombieland, and the Palme d'Or-winning Triangle of Sadness.
Sarajevo Film Festival Director Jovan Marjanović noted that Harrelson can convince audiences even in the most unconventional roles, appearing as natural as someone you might encounter in everyday life. According to Marjanović, the actor's talent, charisma, and bold choices continue to inspire new generations.
The Sarajevo Connection Adds Special Meaning to the Award
Welcome to Sarajevo depicted the conflict between the professional distance of journalists and the human devastation they witnessed while working in the midst of war. The film questioned how the conflict in Bosnia was portrayed in the international media by blending real war footage with fictional scenes.
Harrelson's recognition in the same city years later is not just a celebration of a successful Hollywood career. The festival welcomes back an actor from one of the films that narrates its recent history while also bringing Welcome to Sarajevo back to the audience after all these years.
