Independence Day Parade Canceled in Washington, D.C.
Deadline
The extreme heat in Washington, D.C. has led to the cancellation of the annual Independence Day parade. Organizers stated, "The National Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the District of Columbia, and the heat index is expected to be between 110°F and 115°F."
This decision was made after extensive consultations with the National Park Service, the District of Columbia City Government, and Freedom 250. The organization emphasized that the safety of participants, spectators, and staff was their top priority. The parade takes place around the National Mall but is organized separately from Freedom 250. Freedom 250 is an organization linked to Donald Trump, organizing events such as the Great American State Fair and the Salute to America scheduled for Saturday.
Due to the extreme heat, heightened security measures will be in place around the Washington Monument, and the Salute to America event will begin later in the day. Additionally, the State Fair will open on Saturday afternoon. Donald Trump is scheduled to speak at 9:45 PM, followed by a fireworks display. Meteorologists have warned that there could be scattered storms in the evening.
Another tradition related to Independence Day, the reading of the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives, has been moved indoors. However, one tradition continued: the A Capitol Fourth concert held in the west lawn of the Capitol took place this year as well.
