'Victorian Psycho' Novel Explores Themes of Revenge and Psychopathy
The Hollywood Reporter
Virginia Feito's novel 'Victorian Psycho' offers readers an experience that will quicken their heartbeats. Set in the Victorian era, the story follows Winifred Notty, the new caretaker of the wealthy Pounds family. However, the fact that Winifred is a psychopath on a quest for revenge brings great danger to the family. Feito highlights the theme of "revenge against the patriarchy" by blending dark humor and gothic horror in this work.
In her novel, Feito ensures that her character uses humor to attract and manipulate readers. The author states, "Psychopaths can be very charming and superficial," noting that she employed humor as a tool to make Winifred relatable to the readers. This situation complicates the readers' relationship with the character; Winifred's dark intentions make it difficult to empathize with her.
In addition to the novel, Feito also penned the screenplay for the film. Directed by Zachary Wigon, the film features Maika Monroe as Winifred. Famous names like Ruth Wilson, Jason Isaacs, and Thomasin McKenzie are also part of the cast. After completing the first draft of the novel, Feito reached out to Wigon to get his insights, as she trusts him as a storyteller. Wigon's interest in the project after reading the novel accelerated the adaptation process for the film.
