Triple 9 is a heist thriller where former Navy SEALs turned criminals face off against law enforcement in Atlanta and Russian gangs. Despite not achieving the expected success in theaters, the film has encountered an unexpected wave of interest this week on the streaming platform Tubi. It has currently risen to second place among the platform's most popular titles. Directed by John Hillcoat, the film features a talented cast including Casey Affleck, Kate Winslet, Anthony Mackie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Woody Harrelson, Gal Gadot, Norman Reedus, and Aaron Paul, yet it only grossed $25 million at the box office. Despite its $20 million budget, the film performed relatively weakly in theaters.

Although Hillcoat is known for neo-Western films like The Proposition and The Road, Triple 9 is one of his most ambitious ensemble projects. Having previously directed Lawless, Hillcoat has once again brought together an impressive cast for this production in 2016. The film has a score of 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critical consensus stating: "While the pulpy potboiler thrills of Triple 9 may not fully match the fiery talents of its cast, the film's efficiently crafted genre entertainment is sufficient to balance its problematic flaws."

The crime thriller subgenre has never gone out of style. While Den of Thieves, starring Gerard Butler, and its sequel have achieved significant success, Chris Hemsworth's star-studded Crime 101 has been critically successful earlier this year. Similarly, Michael Mann is working on his project Heat 2, which is considered perhaps the most anticipated crime film since The Godfather Part II.

Mann has assembled an A-list cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio for this project, with filming expected to start this year. Although Triple 9 did not succeed in theaters, it seems to have found new life on streaming platforms. Films have the chance to rediscover their audience across different platforms and time periods. Such discoveries particularly highlight the lasting value of films that may have disappointed in theaters.
