In recent years, the fantasy genre has largely concentrated in the television space. This is primarily due to the immense popularity of Game of Thrones and its two successful spin-offs, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. With other examples like Netflix's The Witcher and Prime Video's The Wheel of Time, exciting projects are on the way for the genre's return to the big screen. Projects like several spin-offs of The Lord of the Rings actively being developed by Peter Jackson are part of this transformation. However, one of the most anticipated projects of next year is facing a new controversy.
Children of Blood & Bone, which has been in development for years and is the beloved first book of the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy, will finally hit the big screen in early 2027. Following this news, which has generated great excitement among fans, the series' creator and author Tomi Adeyemi officially rejected the adaptation, stating on social media, "I haven't seen the film and I won't watch it." Adeyemi did not provide details about the reasons for the "painful" split from the project, but in one of her messages, she notably told lead actress Amandla Stenberg, "Never use my name in an interview or video again. Don't message me. Don't call me."
Stenberg has long been the target of fan backlash due to her roles in The Hunger Games and the controversial Star Wars spin-off The Acolyte. She has also faced discussions regarding her role in the adaptation of Children of Blood & Bone. In February 2025, Stenberg issued an official response to accusations of "stealing roles from dark-skinned women." According to messages shared by Adeyemi, it appears that the split between the author and Stenberg occurred after comments were made about their creative collaborations. This situation adds further uncertainty about the future of the adaptation.
