Tom Holland revealed: The Spider-Man cut that met all audience requests 'never worked'

Transforming a film into everything the audience wants doesn't always result in a better movie.

Tom Holland shared an intriguing experiment that took place during the editing process of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The production team prepared an alternative version that incorporated notes from viewers who attended test screenings. However, the resulting film was deemed unsuccessful by the lead actors.

In an interview with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, Holland stated that they watched the film in many different forms during the production process, and regarding the cut made to meet the demands of test audiences, he said, “We hated it. It never worked”.

All notes from test audiences were applied to the same film

According to Holland, test screenings were held with selected audiences during the production process, and a significant amount of feedback was collected about the film.

In one of the edits made after these screenings, the notes given by the audience were largely applied simultaneously. Scenes, character usage, and the film's narrative balance were altered according to audience requests.

The resulting version technically contained the elements the audience wanted. However, according to Holland, when these were put together, they did not create a cohesive film.

The actor acknowledged that the changes were what the participants in the test screenings requested, but he stated that they did not align with the film they wanted to create as artists.

It’s not accurate to say “Tom Holland didn’t like his own film”

This statement does not mean that Holland didn’t like the final version of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The production he referred to is just one of the many alternative versions tested in the editing room. This cut was later modified, and some lessons learned from the tests were incorporated into the final film in various ways.

Holland emphasized that a film's editing process can go in thousands of different directions, describing the events not as a critique of the completed work but as an attempt to find the right balance.

Therefore, this statement does not indicate that there was a reshoot crisis for the film, that the studio and actors clashed, or that the version set to be released was disliked.

The difference between listening to fans and writing a film for fans

Holland previously mentioned that during the preparations for the new film, he closely followed Spider-Man discussions online and tried to understand what kind of story fans wanted to see.

According to the actor, the audience's primary expectation was to watch a more relatable Peter Parker, who is trying to save his own life and identity, rather than a superhero trying to save the world. Holland also stated that he brought these views into the creative process before the script was written.

His new statement highlights the difference between listening to fans' general expectations and mechanically applying every request from test screenings.

The film team took into account the audience's expectation for a return to Peter Parker's loneliness and a smaller-scale story. In contrast, when separate notes given for each scene or character were applied simultaneously, the film's own creative direction weakened.

In short, test audiences served as a compass; when put behind the wheel, the vehicle was heading for a wall.

The final film's Peter Parker-centric structure may not be a coincidence

In the promotions and initial evaluations of the version set for release, particular attention was drawn to Peter Parker's loneliness, his transition to adulthood, and the psychological pressure on the character.

Zendaya described the new film as one of the most personal Peter Parker narratives they have seen so far, while director Destin Daniel Cretton noted that he focused on the Peter character before the superhero. In the film, Peter watches as MJ and Ned continue their lives without him in a world where everyone has forgotten him.

No direct connection was established between the rejection of the cut that met all the demands of test audiences and the personal identity of the final film. However, what Holland described suggests that the production team chose to maintain specific creative preferences rather than transforming the film into a more crowded or fan-service-heavy structure.

This connection is an editorial inference made through statements and the published evaluations of the film.

The film's direction changed multiple times in the editing room

In big-budget productions, test screenings are used to see which parts of the film work and where the audience loses interest.

However, Holland's statement brings to light the potential problem of evaluating audience notes as a direct order list. Showing a character more, increasing the action, or giving more room to a relationship the audience wants may seem positive on its own. Yet, when all these requests are implemented, the film's pace, focus, and the core story it wants to tell can become scattered.

The team of Spider-Man: Brand New Day also chose to select the requests that aligned with the film's creative structure rather than keeping all the demands from the tests.

Although the unsuccessful cut described by Holland will not reach theaters, it provides one of the clearest behind-the-scenes details about how the film's final identity was found.

When will Spider-Man: Brand New Day be released?

In the film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Tom Holland is joined by Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and Michael Mando.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hit theaters in Turkey on July 31, 2026. The distribution in Turkey is handled by TME Films.

The version that did everything the test audience wanted may have been discarded. However, according to Holland, this failed attempt helped the production team understand what kind of film they did not want to make.
