The highly anticipated baseball film "The Comebacker" starring Tom Hanks will be released in theaters on July 30, 2027. Sony Pictures has announced the film's release date. Hanks plays the lead role in this project, which is based on the short story of the same name by Dave Eggers from 2024, with a screenplay written by Marielle Heller.

"The Comebacker" tells the story of a pitching coach, played by Hanks, whose life dramatically changes after being hit on the head by a ball while standing on the field. The project is produced in collaboration with Major League Baseball by Playtone and Leah Holzer. This film will be Hanks' second baseball-themed project.

Previously, Hanks stepped into the baseball world in the 1992 film "A League of Their Own." In that film, Hanks portrayed Jimmy Dugan, the manager of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and his line, "There's no crying in baseball," has become iconic. This film holds a significant place in Hanks' career and ranks 54th on AFI's list of the best movie quotes.

Marielle Heller most recently worked with Amy Adams on the 2024 film "Nightbitch." Heller's previous directing projects include "The Diary of a Teenage Girl," "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" and Hanks' starring role in "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood." As a two-time Oscar-winning actor, Hanks has also participated in animated projects like "Toy Story 5" recently.
