The Rookie Bids Farewell to Monica Stevens Character with a Perfect Closure in Season 8

Despite complaints about the long-running storylines throughout the eighth season of The Rookie, the series finally concluded one of its most significant sagas in a graceful and thought-provoking manner. The character Monica Stevens, portrayed by Bridget Regan, had been a villain in the show for several seasons, but her storyline had stagnated in the final episodes. In episode 17, Monica visits the office of Liam Glasser's (Seth Gabel) lawyer Malcolm (Sean Patrick Thomas) in search of a deal to exit the game. However, the police are already aware of her schemes, and Monica's attempt to be a double agent fails.
Monica is threatened when she meets a criminal named Aidan Warner (Tim Griffin), who tells her that she won't be able to fulfill her deal if she can't deliver. Since the police are eavesdropping on this meeting, they realize that Monica has violated her immunity agreement and begin to follow her. In a scene where she bids farewell at Wesley Evers' (Shawn Ashmore) house, Monica's human side is revealed, but she is ultimately stopped by a driver at LAX as she gets into an Uber. Accepting her fate, she mutters, "Please don't hit me in the face," and two gunshots are heard. The image of Monica lying on the ground with her bright red hair is the latest clue regarding her character's vanity. The next morning, the team arrives at the scene, bringing a strong closure to Monica's storyline.
Alongside Monica's storyline, there is a subplot involving the returning character Aaron Thorsen (Tru Valentino). Aaron is attacked while driving an expensive car, and the thieves steal his new watch worth $800,000. Although Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) follows leads on stolen cars and other criminals, the car and watch remain missing. Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) visits Pierre (Michael Nouri), who sells Aaron's jewelry, and also tries to get help in choosing Lucy's engagement ring. Eventually, the vehicle is found, a chase ensues, and it becomes clear that a person named Winchell, who works with Pierre, has targeted Aaron.
The story involving Miranda (Hannah Barefoot), who has run away with Glasser's children, continues as well. John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) find her at a friend's house and convince her to go to court. In the courtroom, Nolan is called by the prosecutor and details that Glasser is a dangerous individual. The judge grants Miranda full custody rights and issues a restraining order preventing Glasser from seeing his children. However, Glasser threatens Nolan by mentioning that he has been stagnant during the time when he was the children of infamous serial killers like the Golden State Killer and BTK.
More time could be wished for Tim's storyline. Although the description Lucy gives to Pierre about who she is is quite sweet, the episode gives more space to the voice note Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) accidentally sent to Rodge (Zander Hawley). While this was intended to be a light story, it does not fit the episode. In the end, Tim chooses the perfect ring for Lucy, and order is restored in Rodge and Celina's relationship.
New episodes of The Rookie air on ABC on Monday nights, and episodes can be watched on Hulu in the US.
