Liam Glasser Returns in The Rookie Season 8 - Review
Collider
The Rookie returns to much more interesting and engaging stories this week after last week's unsuccessful mockumentary episode. A new threat emerges in the life of serial killer Liam Glasser (Seth Gabel). While Glasser's lawyer Malcolm (Sean Patrick Thomas) is on the phone with him, gunshots are heard, followed by a drive-by attack on Glasser. None of this deters the LAPD from pursuing the serial killer, yet they still have to protect him from further violence.
At the center of the incident is the rapidly deteriorating divorce case between Miranda (Hannah Barefoot) and Glasser. While Glasser is under 24-hour protection from his lawyer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) takes on the task of finding the assailant. In a dramatic turn of events, Glasser's son Theo goes missing, and the court is closed, but he has been taken without permission by the baby driver Daisy. Miranda, upset, puts herself in a suspicious position by mentioning a weapon she purchased against Glasser to Nyla. When the real conflict begins, Lance Thomas (Glasser's deceased son) attacks Glasser, and Nolan throws himself in front of the attack to save him. As a bitter twist, it is revealed at the end of the episode that Miranda has disappeared with her children and may face kidnapping charges.
Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore) and his partner Sean Del Monte (Michael Trucco) are working from home on their first day as defense attorneys. Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan) assigns them their first client: a man named Ethan McAvoy, who discovers someone dead in his house after a party. Wesley's tactics that disturb Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) pave the way for Ethan's conviction when he is caught by the police buying the necessary materials to dispose of a body. This situation prompts Wesley and Sean to question whether they are sufficient as they return to the world of criminal defense.
Monica Stevens continues to create stories, this time positioning herself as a "double agent." Monica sets up a complex game to win the favor of major criminal Aidan Warner, but Aidan only becomes a surprise when he shoots someone whose loyalty is questioned. Monica wants to exit the game and asks for a buyout to make money. At the end of the episode, seeing a note that says "Cooper Johnson" on her car window could be a sign of Mystery's progression.
Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) seems ready to propose to Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil), and Tim's mother Joy (Sela Ward) appears in the episode. Joy believes Tim should propose with his grandmother's ring, but the ring is in terrible condition. Angela and Nyla say the ring is "horrible" and that Lucy won't accept it. Tim learns that the ring is fake glass and starts looking for a new ring with his mother. While this story brings a light and affectionate side, it allows Tim to address his emotional issues and involve Joy more in the scene.
The connection between Nolan and Bailey (Jenna Dewan) still being strong seems particularly satisfying after Nolan is injured while saving Glasser. The Rookie relationships look fantastic, and it's exciting to wonder where the Glasser story will go. The series airs every Monday night on ABC and can be watched on Hulu in the US.
