The Inbetweeners Returns After 12 Years: Original Cast Reunites for Netflix Film

Aug 04, 20263 min read

It has been 12 years since Will, Jay, Neil, and Simon's last disaster. The original quartet of The Inbetweeners is preparing to reunite once again under the Netflix banner.

According to Variety, the new project is being developed as a reunion film. Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, and Joe Thomas are expected to reprise their roles as Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland, and Simon Cooper, respectively.

The film's storyline has not yet been revealed. Therefore, it remains unknown where the characters are today, what event will bring them back together, or whether scenarios like the wedding and bachelor party discussed on social media will be used.

Last year only paved the way for the return

The Inbetweeners' comeback actually began to take shape for the first time in the fall of 2025.

The show's creators, Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, through their company Fudge Park Productions, made a new deal with Banijay UK regarding the future of the series. At that time, the parties announced that the agreement opened the door for The Inbetweeners to return in various formats, including film, television, and stage.

However, there was neither a determined platform nor a finalized format. Morris and Beesley had only stated that they were planning new adventures for the four main characters.

With this new development, a significant part of that uncertainty is being resolved: The return will be on Netflix, and the format will be a feature film.

Will, Jay, Neil, and Simon are no longer teenagers

The biggest creative challenge for the new film lies here.

The Inbetweeners thrived on the four friends' constant struggles to talk to girls, make social connections, and approach adulthood while in high school. The original series ran for three seasons between 2008 and 2010; the characters later traveled to Greece in the 2011 film The Inbetweeners Movie and to Australia in the 2014 sequel.

In the time that has passed, both the actors and the characters are now nearing their 30s and 40s. One of the most anticipated aspects of the project will be how the new film translates the same humor into entirely different issues like adulthood, marriage, children, and careers.

The direct involvement of Morris and Beesley suggests that Netflix will aim to maintain the continuity of the original series rather than create a completely foreign reboot with new characters.

The “script is ready” information is not yet fully confirmed

Some British publications report that Morris and Beesley have completed the script and that the production is at the stage of adjusting the actors' schedules. The Sun also claimed that agreements have been reached with the four lead actors and that Emily Atack is also wanted to return.

However, Variety's report does not provide details about the film's complete story or finished script. Therefore, it is safer not to present the project's progress at this stage as if it is ready for filming.

The director, shooting date, and release schedule on Netflix have also not been announced.

For the first time since the second film, four names are returning to the same characters

The Inbetweeners' second film closed the series' screen adventure in 2014. Since then, while the actors have occasionally come together for different projects, no new story has been filmed featuring Will, Jay, Neil, and Simon.

The rights agreement in 2025 removed the institutional barrier in front of this; the Netflix move has tied the return to a specific film for the first time.

Therefore, the new project is not a reboot in the classic sense. The Inbetweeners is not being rejuvenated with new actors; it is returning to see how much the four clumsy friends have changed after 12 years.
