StudioCanal Acquires International Distribution Rights for 'Pan's Labyrinth'
The Hollywood Reporter
StudioCanal has secured the international distribution rights for Guillermo del Toro's Oscar-winning film Pan's Labyrinth. This agreement comes after the film's re-screening at the Cannes Film Festival nearly twenty years later. Following its historic acceptance in 2006, Pan's Labyrinth became del Toro's first Academy Award-nominated film, receiving six nominations. Among these nominations are best original screenplay and best foreign language film categories.
The film later won three Oscars—best cinematography, best production design, and best makeup design—and received over 100 international awards. These include three BAFTA awards and seven Goya awards. The restored version presented by Cineverse has started screening at the Debussy Theatre as part of the Cannes Classics selection, with del Toro in attendance.
"After our successful collaboration on The Devil's Backbone, I am honored and thrilled to continue working with my friends at StudioCanal on international sales and distribution for the 20th anniversary of Pan's Labyrinth," said the Mexican director. Del Toro added that StudioCanal's care and attention in supporting classic films in theaters and physical media are "a gift for those who appreciate the art of cinema."
The deal was negotiated by Falko Jahn, Vice President of Editorial Development and Library Growth, and continues to expand del Toro's Necropia company catalog collection. The Mexican distributor Cinépolis will manage the film's re-release cinema distribution across Mexico and Latin America.
StudioCanal will release the new 4K restored version by the end of this year and plans a series of cinema re-screenings in key regions such as Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Benelux, and Australia during the fall.
