Stephen King and Sam Raimi are collaborating for the first time in the same film: Desperation is returning to the big screen

For the first time, the paths of Stephen King and Sam Raimi intersect directly in a production after decades of mutual admiration. Searchlight Pictures is preparing to adapt King’s novel Desperation, set in the Nevada desert, for the cinema.

In the project first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Raimi will serve as a producer alongside his Ghost House Pictures partner Robert Tapert. The screenplay is being written by Ryan Brennan. Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are in discussions for directing; it has not yet been announced that the parties have signed an agreement.

A death trap set in the Nevada desert

Desperation revolves around police officer Collie Entragian, who kidnaps travelers passing through a desolate mining town in Nevada. At first glance, the sadistic and seemingly out-of-control Entragian is revealed to be under the influence of an ancient entity known as Tak.

The foreigners held in the town are trying to escape not only from an armed police officer but also from the supernatural evil that has settled in Desperation’s past and its abandoned mines.

King had opened doors for Raimi’s career

Desperation will be the first film where Stephen King and Sam Raimi collaborate as producers on the same project. However, the connection between the two horror masters dates back to the early 1980s.

While Raimi struggled to find a distributor for his low-budget film The Evil Dead, King wrote an extremely positive review after watching the film at the Cannes Film Market. Raimi has repeatedly stated that King’s support drew attention to the film and opened doors for his career. Nearly 45 years later, the duo is coming together again for a King adaptation.

Desperation was previously adapted for television

King’s novel was first turned into a television film for ABC in 2006. In the adaptation directed by Mick Garris, Ron Perlman played Collie Entragian, while Tom Skerritt portrayed writer Johnny Marinville. The cast also included Steven Weber, Annabeth Gish, Henry Thomas, and Charles Durning.

The production being developed by Searchlight is planned not as a remake of the television film but as a new adaptation of the novel for theaters. It is still unknown which characters the story will focus on or how much it will differ from the previous version.

A new horror project after Bloodlines

Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein have become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directing teams after Final Destination: Bloodlines. If the duo finalizes their agreement for Desperation, they will transition to King’s darker and more religiously themed story following a large-scale horror film tied to the series.

Searchlight has not yet released an official press statement regarding the project. The cast, shooting schedule, and release date have also not been announced. Therefore, it is necessary to wait for the agreement to be finalized before stating that Lipovsky and Stein will definitely direct the film.
