Stephen Colbert returned to late-night television just 24 hours after hosting his final Late Show on CBS, this time in public access television in Michigan. Colbert hosted a program called Only in Monroe at 11:30 in Monroe, Michigan, featuring surprise guests like Jack White and Jeff Daniels. Additionally, stars such as Steve Buscemi, Eminem, and Byron Allen joined the show via FaceTime. Colbert also welcomed the show's regular hosts, Michelle Baumann and Kaye Lani Rae Rafko Wilson; Wilson is a former Miss America.

At the beginning of the program, Colbert said, "The last time I was here, I spent 11 years as the main host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS, and that ended last night." He added, "The 23 hours without being on television were quite challenging, so I’m grateful to be here at Monroe Community Media." This was Colbert's second time hosting Only in Monroe; he previously hosted an episode in the summer of 2015.

This program, detected by LateNighter, was structured similarly to a classic late-night show; however, it included a monologue and interviews focusing on topics related to southern Michigan. The show concluded with Colbert, Baumann, Wilson, Daniels, and White destroying the Only in Monroe set in a trash can. Colbert referenced the past by telling the audience, "We’ve been lucky to be here for the last 11 years; we can’t take that for granted."

It’s not immediately clear when Colbert filmed his segment for Only in Monroe. In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, he mentioned he would be in Washington, D.C. for his brother's wedding. "My brother is getting married, so we’ll be here with my family on the 21st, and then we’ll head to D.C. for the wedding," he said. Colbert shared the emotional intensity he experienced after the end of his late-night show, saying, "There’s something much more important right after the end of the late-night show."
