Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Error in The Ninth Jedi Turned into a Creative Decision
Screen Rant
Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi draws attention to a significant creative decision stemming from a mistake made in childhood. This new limited anime series, produced by Lucasfilm and Production I.G, focuses on Lah Kara's mission to save her father. First introduced in the first volume of Star Wars: Visions, this story has spawned many side tales, including a sequel titled Child of Hope. Now, Kara's journey will continue with Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, which will be available exclusively on Disney+ and Hulu.
One of the defining elements of the series was inspired by an unexpected source. Kenji Kamiyama, the creator of the limited series, explained that a misunderstanding about how lightsabers work contributed to the show's commentary on these iconic weapons. During a panel at Anime Expo, Kamiyama revealed that a mistake he made while watching the original Star Wars films as a child led to the concept of color-changing lightsabers.
Kamiyama confessed that when he first watched the original trilogy, he thought lightsabers changed color automatically depending on the user. This notion stuck with him even after he understood how lightsabers functioned in the Star Wars universe. Years later, while developing The Ninth Jedi, he transformed this childhood memory into one of the story's key concepts.
In The Ninth Jedi, lightsaber spears change color based on the user's connection to the Force. This means that the weapons do not always adhere to the color of a crystal; instead, it varies depending on the user. This feature sets the limited series apart from other parts of the Star Wars universe, offering viewers a fresh perspective on one of the franchise's most recognizable traits.
The promotional trailer and artwork for Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi were also released during the Anime Expo panel. The series will consist of a total of eight episodes and will bring back a voice cast including Kimiko Glenn (Kara), Andrew Kishino (Juro), Masi Oka (Ethan), Patrick Seitz (Homen), JP Karliak (Gramps), Simu Liu (Lah Zhima), and Neil Kaplan. New actors such as Feodor Chin (Gennoh), Young Mazino (Nawaam), Chase Sui Wonders (Tafflah), and Keone Young (Kwana) will also join. All episodes will be released on Disney+ and Hulu on August 5, 2026.
