The Star Trek film series is facing its biggest test in 47 years. In 1979, Gene Roddenberry's science fiction work, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, transcended television boundaries and transformed into a film series. Since then, a total of 13 more films have been released in theaters and on digital platforms.

The first six Star Trek films focused on Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and the crew of Star Trek: The Original Series. In 1994, Shatner's Kirk character passed the torch to Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation. This new crew took the lead in the next four feature films.

In 2009, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek film successfully passed the series' first major test by rebooting the journeys of the Starship Enterprise in an alternate reality. Abrams' successful cast demonstrated that the original crew could also be portrayed by new and younger actors. However, since 2016, Paramount has been struggling to release a new film.

In 2025, Paramount Skydance transitioned into a new era by canceling the development of Star Trek 4. In this new era, the Star Trek films question whether they can capture the audience's interest without focusing on iconic characters like Captain Kirk or Captain Picard. The new Star Trek film in development aims to present an independent story that is not connected to previous films or series, breaking away from the franchise's 60-year history.
