Amazon MGM Studios has announced that the sequel to the legendary comedy film will hit theaters on April 23, 2027. Directed by Mel Brooks, the original Spaceballs film was released in 1987, and the sequel will be helmed by Josh Greenbaum. Writers include Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez.

From the original film, Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and George Wyner will reprise their roles. The new production will feature Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan. Among the producers are Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody from Imagine Entertainment, as well as Josh Gad, Mel Brooks, Josh Greenbaum, and Kevin Salter.

The original Spaceballs, released by MGM in 1987, is a comedy that parodies George Lucas's Star Wars. The film grossed $38.1 million at the box office and has become a cult favorite over time. The cast included Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner, and John Candy, while Joan Rivers provided voice work as a parody of C-3PO.

In the summer of 2024, Josh Gad announced on Instagram that he was working on the sequel. Gad described working with writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez as "heavenly," stating that the script they developed could be the funniest and best work of his career.

The official title and plot details of the film have not yet been revealed. The production will reunite with moviegoers half a century later, echoing the original film's homage to Star Wars.
