Netflix has acquired the original sci-fi screenplay 'Somewhere Out There', written by Max Taxe, after an intense bidding war. The project, notable for having Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, attached to direct, has generated significant interest in the industry. Levy will also serve as a producer alongside Dan Levine from 21 Laps.

'Somewhere Out There' is categorized as "emotional sci-fi" and is said to be in the vein of Denis Villeneuve's alien-themed 'Arrival' (which Levy produced) and Levy's time-travel adventure 'The Adam Project' made for Netflix in 2022. The screenplay revolves around a father who sends a message to the stars after losing his wife, and something out there begins to respond.

Given Levy's history of working with stars like Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling, Hugh Jackman, and Mark Ruffalo, it has been noted that several well-known actors are already interested in the father's role. Becca Edelman, who brought the project to 21 Laps, will oversee the productions.

Levy has recently completed filming the latest Star Wars movie 'Starfighter', starring Gosling. This adventure film has entered a long post-production process in preparation for its release on May 28, 2027. Levy's previous film 'Deadpool & Wolverine' achieved over $1.3 billion in worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.

In addition to 'Somewhere Out There', Taxe is also part of 21 Laps' portfolio with his original screenplay 'Ripple', starring Jack Quaid. The writer is also noted for penning the screenplay for the sci-fi romantic comedy 'Moonshot', which starred Lana Condor and Cole Sprouse and was released on HBO Max in 2022.
