Sean Gordon Murphy, the creator of Batman: White Knight, is signing on to a project under his creative control for the first time in nearly a decade. This new sequel series, titled The Last Driver, will be published by Image Comics in August, featuring Murphy as both writer and artist. The project draws inspiration from classic films like John Carpenter's Escape from New York and the cult classic Vanishing Point.

Murphy's independent and rebellious spirit, observed throughout his career, comes to life again in The Last Driver. Previously, he gained attention with Punk Rock Jesus, a work centered around a clone of Jesus Christ, created under DC's Vertigo imprint, and achieved great success by stepping outside the traditional superhero genre with Batman: White Knight. The artist's passion for vehicles, cars, and motorcycles will also be prominently displayed in The Last Driver.

The Last Driver is set in a dystopian America. With the advancement of technology, cities have developed a robotic transportation system called Grid, which not only renders cars obsolete but also makes them illegal. In this world, a fugitive named Clutch is forced to take the wheel one last time to save his grandson's life. What begins as a rescue operation gradually transforms into a rebellion against technology, fascism, and a divided American future.

One of the most striking features of the project is its publishing format. The Last Driver will be released in a horizontal, landscape format, a presentation style that is rarely seen in modern publishing. This format choice allows readers to experience action scenes with an unrestricted width.

Murphy has always shown resistance against the corporate system in his career, and this new project combines that with his passion for cars. Departing from the standard form of cyberpunk action comics, The Last Driver tells the story of a struggle against the digital age while continuing to pay attention to detail in driving and vehicle design, consistent with Murphy's previous works.
