Samara Weaving to Play Emma Frost in Marvel's New X-Men Film

Jul 31, 20263 min read

One of the first major roles revealed in the new mutant generation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Emma Frost. Samara Weaving, known for the Ready or Not films, has reportedly been cast to portray the character in the upcoming X-Men production directed by Jake Schreier.

According to sources from Deadline, Schreier and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige met with various actors over the summer. It is reported that Emma Frost was one of the roles that underwent the most extensive search within the new cast, and the decision was made in favor of Weaving this week. TheWrap also confirmed the actress's participation in the film through its own sources.

Marvel Studios has not commented on the news. Therefore, while the casting has been verified by reliable trade publications, an official announcement from the studio is still awaited.

Emma Frost Becomes One of the First Links in the New X-Men Cast

In the comics, Emma Frost initially stands against the X-Men but eventually becomes one of the team's most important members. Known for her telepathic abilities and her power to turn her body into diamond, the character is central to the series regarding mutant politics, education, and leadership.

Weaving will be the third actress to portray Emma Frost on screen. The character was previously played by Tahyna Tozzi in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and by January Jones in X-Men: First Class.

The new film is being developed not as a continuation of the previous X-Men series, but as a reboot that will re-establish mutants within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The early casting of Emma Frost suggests that the character is considered to be a significant part of the new team, rather than just a brief appearance. However, the character's role in the story has not yet been disclosed.

The Film Will Be Directed by Thunderbolts' Director

Jake Schreier, who has worked with Marvel Studios on Thunderbolts, will be in the director's chair. Schreier had previously stated that the project is still in development and that work on the script is ongoing.

The current draft of the script is being prepared by Lee Sung Jin, the creator of Beef, along with Joanna Calo, one of the writers and producers of The Bear. The two have previously collaborated with Schreier on the Thunderbolts and Beef projects. The director noted that the team is the right creative partners to convey the political ideas of the X-Men through the characters' personal conflicts.

A script had previously been prepared by Michael Lesslie for the film. It is unknown how much the new draft being worked on by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo has changed the story.

The Rest of the Cast is Being Kept Under Wraps

No other actors for the film have been announced besides Samara Weaving. It has also not yet been confirmed whether Marvel will use key characters like Cyclops, Storm, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Rogue, and Magneto.

The studio has not shared details about the plot, shooting dates, or release schedule. There is also no set release date for the new X-Men in Marvel's official film calendar.

If Weaving's casting is officially announced, Emma Frost will be one of the first major mutants to define the face of Marvel's new X-Men era. The next phase will shift focus to the team being built around the character and how different Marvel's casting choices will be compared to previous films.
