Prime Video's Philip K. Dick Adaptation Sets an Example for Netflix
Screen Rant
A few years ago, Prime Video presented one of the best television adaptations of Philip K. Dick's work. Like many of Philip K. Dick's stories, this sci-fi series took many creative liberties while bringing the author's complex style to the screen. However, this series serves as an excellent example of how Netflix's upcoming Philip K. Dick adaptation should respect its source material.
Adapting Philip K. Dick's stories for the screen has never been easy. Some productions, like Blade Runner, only take the main themes, while others, such as Minority Report and Total Recall, have significantly altered their original stories. A few productions, like A Scanner Darkly, have managed to stay true to the source material without straying too far.
Prime Video's The Man in the High Castle is also based on a Philip K. Dick novel of the same name. Following a similar path as other adaptations, it strives to capture the essence of the themes in the source material. Despite taking many creative liberties, the series works quite impressively and keeps the audience engaged throughout its nearly entire runtime.
The Man in the High Castle is a perfect example of why adapting Philip K. Dick's books to the screen is often so challenging. This work, filled with intense inner monologues, violates the pacing rules of traditional storytelling. However, Prime Video's series successfully expands its world by taking the theme of alternative history and developing it into a multi-season narrative.
