PlayStation Cancels Physical Disks Following GTA 6 Announcement

As 2026 continues to be a rollercoaster year for gamers, most believe the positives of this year far outweigh the negatives. The James Bond game 007 First Light, developed by IO Interactive, stands out as one of the biggest game launches in years. However, following this success, the studio announced layoffs this week as part of a broader restructuring process at Microsoft. Gamers continue to be excited about major titles like Marvel’s Wolverine, which will be exclusive to PlayStation 5 this year.
Grand Theft Auto 6 has been in development for over a decade and was initially slated for release in 2025. However, the game has been delayed multiple times, and it has finally been confirmed for release on November 19. When Rockstar Games announced the $80 price tag for GTA 6, it made it the most expensive base game in history. Additionally, Rockstar's confirmation that physical copies will not contain disks and will only provide a code to download the game on consoles surprised fans. Following this development, PlayStation announced that all production of physical disks will cease by January 2028.
This is considered a groundbreaking announcement for the gaming world as it jeopardizes the future of stores like GameStop that sell physical disks. It also affects collectors of physical media. PlayStation has long promoted a transition to the digital world, so this announcement was not entirely surprising. Even the PlayStation 5 Pro, released last year, lacks a disk drive; however, it is possible to purchase an external disk drive for about $80.
