'Obsession' Opening Exceeds 17 Million Dollars

Focus Features and Blumhouse's 'Obsession', which was purchased for 15 million dollars at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), reached 17.2 million dollars at its opening, surpassing expectations and securing the third spot. The film stands out as the first major project in cinema for YouTube creator Curry Barker.

As the weekend approached, 'Obsession' was expected to open between 8-9 million dollars. However, Lionsgate's 'Michael' outperformed expectations, returning to the top spot with 26 million dollars in its third weekend. In second place was 20th Century Studios' 'Devil Wears Prada 2', which earned approximately 17.8 million dollars.

The 4.8 million dollars that 'Obsession' earned on Sunday was significantly higher than the previously reported 3.7 million dollars. The romantic horror film achieved a rare success among horror films by receiving an A- CinemaScore from audiences. Typically, such films score between B and C. For example, 'Get Out' also received an A-.

The film drew attention with PLFs, representing about 40% of weekend ticket sales. 39% of viewers under 25 and 39% of viewers aged 25-34 preferred 'Obsession'. According to Screen Engine/Comscore's PostTrak data, 70% of viewers definitely recommended the film. These figures provided Barker with a better-than-expected weekend performance.

Barker will reunite with Blumhouse and Focus Features for a project titled 'Anything But Ghosts'. He will star alongside Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard in this film. Additionally, he will direct A24's remake of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'.
