Netflix's platform-defining masterpiece Stranger Things is returning to screens soon with a new spin-off series. The animated series Stranger Things: Tales from '85 will premiere on Netflix on April 23. Following the successful journey of the original series that spanned nearly a decade over five seasons, the producers are preparing to take the franchise in new directions.
Stranger Things: Tales from '85 will focus on events occurring between the second and third seasons of the original series. Set in the winter of 1985, the story is inspired by popular morning cartoons from the 1980s. Drawing from classic productions like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Scooby-Doo, and The Real Ghostbusters, this animated series will showcase familiar characters battling new supernatural and sci-fi mysteries.
At the helm of the spin-off series is producer and writer Eric Robles. The Duffer Brothers will continue their roles as executive producers, and Shawn Levy will also be involved in this capacity. New cast members include Odessa A'zion and Janeane Garofalo. The roles created by original series stars Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, and David Harbour will be taken over by new actors.
The main structure of the original Stranger Things series concluded in 2025. The final season's finale aired on December 31, but it did not meet the high expectations set by critics. Despite the final season holding an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it fell significantly short of the first season's 97% rating, which was released in 2016. Netflix and the Duffer Brothers are hopeful that this new spin-off will bring the franchise back to its former glory.
Historically, spin-off series have faced challenges in achieving success. While House of the Dragon stands strong, Taylor Sheridan's successful productions like 1883 and 1923 have also struggled to reach the popularity of the original series. Stranger Things: Tales from '85 is expected to break this trend and win the hearts of fans who love the 1980s. The new animated series is eagerly anticipated by viewers for its blend of 1980s nostalgia and the unique atmosphere of the Stranger Things universe.
