Netflix's 'A Different World' Series Returns 39 Years Later

The new version of Netflix's 'A Different World,' which serves as a continuation of the original series, will premiere on September 24, 2026, the same day the original series first aired. This new iteration of the sitcom, which aired on NBC from 1987 to 1993 and focused on HBCU students, was announced at Netflix's American Black Film Festival (ABFF). This date highlights Netflix's commitment to honoring the legacy of the series and introducing Hillman to a new generation.
Several members of the original cast will reprise their roles alongside a new group of actors portraying Hillman students. The creative team also includes names from the original series. Among those attending the announcement were producers Felicia Pride, director Debbie Allen, and the leader of the new class, Maleah Joi Moon.
The new 'A Different World' centers around Deborah (Moon), the youngest child of Whitley (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison). As Deborah spends her first year at Hillman, where her parents graduated, she tries to break free from their shadow. According to the logline, while Deborah works to build her own legacy, she experiences some of the best times of her life alongside Hillman's brightest and most talented new generation.
The cast also features new names like Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece, and Chibuikem Uche. From the original series, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Darryl M. Bell, and Cree Summer will return to reprise their former roles. The new cast also includes Vincent Jamal Hooper, Elijah J. Roberts, Renee Harrison, Famecia Ward, Dasan Frazier, Tichina Arnold, Joshua Suiter, Raven Goodwin, and Cliff “Method Man” Smith.
