The Meaning of Mother Mary's Red Dress Explained by David Lowery

David Lowery, the director of the film Mother Mary, provided detailed explanations about the famous red dress and performance in the final scenes of the production. Although it seems that the former pop star Mother Mary, played by Anne Hathaway, does not wear the dress she desires so much at the end of her artistic journey with her former costume designer Sam (Michaela Cole), Sam completes the dress in her workshop, and Mary's assistant Hilda (Hunter Schafer) narrates the performance.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Lowery explained the meaning of the final scene, stating that he designed the dress as "a work of art in itself." The director expressed, "If we really get into detail, the dress is a song. This is a film that makes a song and a dress the same thing. At the end of the film, we see her song." The dress serves as the physical representation of the music and visual art they created together while mending Sam and Mary's relationship.

Lowery spoke about the reason for Hilda's narration: "The idea of writing this narration came up because I cast Hunter Schafer, and I love Hunter Schafer. While shooting the film, I felt she needed to be in the end of the film. The character exists in writing, but there was something in Hunter's performance that required the ending to be done this way. After we started shooting, I wrote that ending for her."

After the exorcism ceremony from which they release the ghost of Mother Mary, her team comes to take her to prepare for the concert. After a while, while they are making the new dress, Hilda narrates that Mary emerges from the crowd during the walk, stripping away pieces of her extravagant outfit, even parts of the signature spotlight, as she steps onto the stage and sings her song.

As Hilda points out, this is actually "Sam's song," and the film returns to Mary apologizing to Sam before they part ways. As we see, the dress, which is the climax of the story, stands alone, and Mary has not worn it. What truly matters is the work of making the dress for Sam and Mary; Mary’s comeback performance has become more meaningful without a magnificent costume.

While Lowery's intention to represent art on its own resonates with some people, it appears that the film Mother Mary is a divisive work among critics. Ultimately, the film focuses on the distance between two creators, personal crises, ghosts, and the tangible creation that emerges from true artistic talent.
