After a five-year hiatus, Mortal Kombat returns to the big screen with a new film that is a sequel to the 2021 video game adaptation. This time, the character roster has expanded even further. The currently released sequel introduces fan-favorite fighters like Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Baraka (CJ Bloomfield), and the villainous Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). As the Mortal Kombat tournament officially begins, the battle for survival in this universe unleashes all its fury.

The first film introduced video game characters like Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), and Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), but it revolved around a new hero named Cole Young (Lewis Tan). Now, Johnny Cage takes center stage as he faces ninjas, otherworldly beings, and resurrected demon fighters. Like the first film and the video games, many characters meet gruesome fatalities in this sequel. Despite being the main character, Cole Young is killed by Shao Kahn in the early rounds of the tournament. Liu Kang faces a similar fate, but it seems he may return in a sequel.

In the video games, Liu Kang returns from death as the fire god, gaining elemental powers like Raiden (Tadanobu Asano). After defeating Shao Kahn and winning the tournament, Johnny, Kitana, and Earthrealm allies begin their quest to find their fallen friends. They are also seen searching for ways to bring back Kung Lao (Max Huang), who died in the first film but is resurrected in the sequel, killing Liu Kang on behalf of Shao Kahn's forces.

The Boys star Karl Urban joins the Mortal Kombat universe by playing the Johnny Cage character hinted at the end of the first film. Johnny is a washed-up action star drawn into the deadly tournament, forced to prove himself alongside fighters much stronger than him. He is known for his comedic antics and the special "nut punch" move he uses against Baraka in the film. After helping save Earthrealm, Johnny embarks on a mission to rescue Liu Kang alongside Kitana, Jade, Kano, and Baraka.
