Minions & Monsters Underperforms at the Box Office
The Hollywood Reporter
Minions & Monsters is showing underwhelming performance, earning $64.5 million during its 5-day opening over the long weekend of July 4th. It reached $39.5 million in its 3-day opening. This figure represents a significant drop compared to the $120 million opening of Despicable Me 4 two years ago. In 2022, Minions: The Rise of Gru earned $122 million in 5 days.
Animated films are standing out in this summer's box office competition dominated by Gen Z horror films during the July 4th long weekend. However, Minions & Monsters' performance remains lower compared to previous years. Toy Story 3 ranks second with a revenue of $32 million in its third week, and it is expected to reach a total of $367 million.
Minions & Monsters is the latest spin-off of the Despicable Me franchise, which holds the title of the highest-grossing animated series of all time. Directed by Pierre Coffin and written by Brian Lynch, the film is earning approximately $87 million worldwide.
The film received an A- Cinemascore from audiences and holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Frank Schreck from The Hollywood Reporter noted that while the film is "a bit too packed," he emphasized that it "offers quite sophisticated and effective humor for a while." Filled with visual gags and Easter eggs, the film provides rich content that will require viewers to watch it multiple times.
