The Michael Jackson biopic is making waves at the box office with an impressive performance in its second week, moving towards becoming one of the most successful music films in history. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson's real-life nephew, alongside a talented cast that includes Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Mike Myers, Kendrick Sampson, Larenz Tate, Liv Symone, and Miles Teller. The film recorded the best domestic opening for the music biopic genre with a $97.2 million three-day debut in North America on April 24.

According to a statement from Lionsgate, Michael is projected to have a global gross of $423.9 million in its second full weekend (comprising $183.3 million from the domestic market and $240.6 million from international markets). This makes it the second music biopic to surpass the $400 million global mark (after the $911 million blockbuster Bohemian Rhapsody) and successfully enters the top 50 highest-grossing music films of all time.

Michael ranks 30th on the all-time chart, surpassing 21 films in a single run and positioning itself just below Disney's 1991 film Beauty and the Beast ($425 million). Among its past achievements, it stands alongside significant music films such as the Oscar-winning The Sound of Music ($286.2 million) and Chicago ($306.8 million), Ryan Coogler's Oscar-winning vampire film Sinners ($368.5 million), John Travolta's hit Grease ($396.2 million), Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again ($394.7 million), and Disney animated classics like Mulan ($304.3 million), The Hunchback of Notre Dame ($325.3 million), Pocahontas ($346.1 million), The Jungle Book ($378 million), and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs ($418.2 million).

The film's box office success has continued despite significant hurdles, including the controversy surrounding Michael Jackson that arose during his 1988 "Bad" tour, which interrupted the narrative and did not directly address the subsequent child sexual abuse allegations against the famous singer, as well as critics' low score of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter indicates that the general public remains interested in the pop icon's story and music.

Given this overall excitement, it is entirely possible for Michael to continue climbing the all-time music film chart. While it remains to be seen if it will surpass the $900 million mark and overtake 2018's Bohemian Rhapsody, it is entirely feasible for Michael to exceed the $500 million threshold in its third weekend in theaters. If so, it would rise nine spots on the chart, surpassing titles like The Greatest Showman ($435 million), Les Misérables ($441.8 million), and La La Land ($472 million) to reach the 21st position. Consequently, Michael would only need to surpass Wicked's $758.7 million gross in 2024 to secure a spot in the all-time top 10, placing it at 9th right below Bohemian Rhapsody.
