Tombstone, a 1993 Western film, features a strong cast of actors. While names like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood are synonymous with the Western genre, Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer have also carved out significant places for themselves in this genre through Tombstone. However, another actor who stands out with his performance in this film and deserves more recognition is Michael Biehn. Biehn managed to impress audiences with his portrayal of the smiling outlaw Johnny Ringo. If things had gone our way, Tombstone could have been a starting point for many Western films featuring Biehn.
There are many reasons to love Tombstone. Its commitment to historical details, period-appropriate costumes, and a fantastic script featuring unforgettable lines like "I'm your huckleberry" set this Western classic apart from its contemporaries. The early '90s was a time when Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven and Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves pushed the boundaries of the Western genre. However, one of the most important characters in Tombstone is Johnny Ringo, played by Michael Biehn. Ringo's name can also be associated with Gregory Peck's classic film The Gunfighter; in that film, Peck portrayed the character Jimmy Ringo, inspired by the real-life Johnny Ringo. However, Biehn's character is not a hero this time.
As a member of the Cowboys with a red bandana and black hat, Ringo is a skilled marksman and an enraged highwayman within the gang terrorizing the town of Tombstone. Ringo sees no problem in killing anyone who crosses his path, and he is introduced at the beginning of the film with a brutal execution he carries out at a wedding in Mexico. In this scene, after ruthlessly shooting a priest, he quotes from the Book of Revelation in the Bible by twisting the holy man's words. Such an introduction immediately captivates the audience. Ringo's cold demeanor, standing in the background during the Cowboys' wedding ambush, reveals the dark nature of his character.
