Martin Short experienced a night that reminded everyone of Paul Shaffer's role as the bandleader and musical director during David Letterman's 22 years hosting The Late Show. At the Netflix is a Joke Presents: This Better Be Funny With David Letterman event, Short and Letterman entertained the audience with a 90-minute conversation at Hollywood's Montalban Theatre. Following this chat, Short performed an original Netflix-themed song with Shaffer accompanying him on piano.

While Short estimated that he had appeared on Letterman's late-night talk show about 50 times, Letterman and his team counted at least 40 appearances. The frequency of Short's appearances was particularly meaningful, as it included his best friend Shaffer, who has been by his side since 1972. Letterman opened the doors of his studio for Short, as it had become almost like a family environment for him.

The event held on Thursday night showcased corporate synergy at its finest. Netflix presented the event, Letterman hosted his long conversation series "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction," and Short has a documentary directed by Lawrence Kasdan titled "Marty, Life Is Short" that will soon be available on the platform. This documentary is set to premiere on Netflix on May 12.

Short's team at the event included his longtime director Marc Gurvitz, WME agents, and Imagine Entertainment president Justin Wilkes. Lawrence Kasdan was also present in the audience to celebrate this moment. Two nights after this event, Letterman appeared with John Mulaney at another Netflix is a Joke event.
