Mahershala Ali has exited the Blade film he waited seven years for: “We would have done it if they wanted to”

Mahershala Ali’s long-uncertain Blade adventure has come to an end. The two-time Oscar-winning actor responded to GQ’s question about whether the Marvel project would still happen with, “It’s not going to happen with me.”

Ali noted that the studio had the capability to bring the project to life but did not utilize it, stating, “We would have done it if they wanted to.” The actor also made it clear that he has stopped waiting: “I’ve moved on.”

The seven-year wait ended before filming could begin

Marvel announced Mahershala Ali as the new Blade at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019. Following the highly anticipated announcement, the project was developed over the years with various directors, screenwriters, and release dates, but it never reached the filming stage.

Ali’s only contribution as a character in the MCU was limited to a brief voiceover in the post-credits scene of the 2021 film Eternals. After two director changes, numerous script revisions, and calendar delays, the film was removed from Marvel’s release schedule in 2024.

The actor’s new statement indicates that the process has not just been delayed. Although there has been no new official announcement from Marvel, Ali has effectively closed the door regarding his contract and participation.

Kevin Feige acknowledged the failure

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently stated that he views their inability to produce the Mahershala Ali-led Blade film as a personal failure.

Feige mentioned that they couldn’t find enough confidence in any of the script drafts; they felt that simply dressing Ali in leather and having him kill vampires was not sufficient. The studio’s constant rewrites in search of an original approach led to Blade remaining at the starting line for years.

Ali, however, evaluates the situation more directly. Reminding that Marvel had bound him to the project with a contract and had the financial power to make the film, the actor sees the project’s failure as the studio’s choice.

The future of the Blade character remains uncertain

Ali’s departure does not mean that Marvel has completely abandoned the Blade character. The actor’s statement ends the version developed with him in the lead; the studio could restart in the future with a different actor, script, and creative team.

Therefore, framing the development as “Blade has been completely canceled” would be too definitive at this stage. The verifiable situation is that the film announced in 2019, centered around Mahershala Ali, will no longer continue with him.

Marvel Studios has yet to respond to requests for comments on the actor’s statements.

He transferred his preparation for Blade to another film

Ali did not walk away from the unproductive process completely empty-handed. The actor, who trained in action and sword fighting for over a year for Blade, utilized this preparation in the film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, directed by former Blade director Bassam Tariq.

When Blade didn’t happen, Tariq prepared an original action story that brought the two together for the first time. Ali stated that the new film is closer to the original and purposeful work he wanted to create than the Marvel project. The actor expressed his desire to be remembered for new stories that resonate with audiences, rather than remakes.
