Kevin: A Sweet Yet Unstable Humor in the Amazon Animated Series Voiced by Jason Schwartzman
The Hollywood Reporter
In Amazon's new animated series Kevin, the main character Kevin (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) does everything a young person living in a big city can do after experiencing a heavy breakup. He moves from his old place, makes new friends, discovers new interests, and begins to see his old neighborhoods with fresh eyes. He takes time to think about what he really wants from relationships or life, considers potential new partners, and ultimately attracts someone to himself.
What makes Kevin's journey more unexpected than most people's stories is that the central character is not a banker in a vest or a tattooed barista, but rather a cat with a proper attitude. The breakup stems not from a love affair, but from human owners. This cat twist is enough to bring a fresh breath to the hangout comedy subgenre with Kevin, created by Joe Wengert and Aubrey Plaza. Although the series may not always realize its full potential in terms of humor and heart, it ultimately finds enough warmth to be worth embracing.
Undoubtedly, a large portion of Kevin's target audience will react after reading this story description, much like how Seth (Gil Ozeri), a normally few-worded animal-loving shelter manager, reacts to an owner who abandons his cat. "Abandoning a furry friend is the greatest shamelessness!" he screams. "You should be judged in Lahey, you scoundrel!" Therefore, you can be assured that this series does not tell a sad story of abandonment as narrated by a Sarah MacLachlan song.
Instead, the series features a cast including Jason Schwartzman, Amy Sedaris, John Waters, Whoopi Goldberg, Aparna Nancherla, Gil Ozeri, and Aubrey Plaza. Created by Aubrey Plaza and Joe Wengert, Kevin will begin streaming on Prime Video on Monday, April 20. The series presents this ordinary yet sweet story of a cat and aims to leave the audience with a warm and tear-jerking effect by bringing them back to their own emotions.
