The Unique Trailer Tradition of the Karlovy Vary Festival
The Hollywood Reporter
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has become an event where participants gather not only to watch cinematic wonders but also to enjoy the festival's iconic trailers. These trailers, as a distinctive part of the festival, feature bold and often absurd short films starring previous guest stars. In the trailers, the Crystal Globe award is often used in creative ways. Famous names like Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson, and Javier Bardem have been past victims of these entertaining trailers.
The mastermind behind the trailers is Czech director Ivan Zachariáš. A Cannes Lions award winner, Zachariáš shot his first trailer in 2004 with Eddie Marsan. However, the true beginning of the series dates back to 2008. That year, festival directors Jiří Bartoška and Kryštof Mucha sought Zachariáš's help to make the trailers more consistent. Thus, the concept of short black-and-white films featuring award-winning actors and directors was born.
Zachariáš also expresses the stress and excitement that comes with creating a new trailer each year. He notes that there have been years when he couldn't take on this project, mentioning that the stress of the process sometimes provides a pleasant break. The creation process of the trailers begins with determining a shooting date that aligns with the stars' schedules and developing creative ideas.
This unique trailer tradition of the Karlovy Vary Festival sparks great curiosity among participants. Viewers enhance their cinematic experience by guessing which trailer will be shown. Zachariáš's creativity and the festival's traditional approach elevate Karlovy Vary to a special place in the world of cinema.
