With a 42-year legacy, the Karate Kid series had nearly reached the brink of extinction after numerous unsuccessful sequels and remakes. However, by changing the roles of the original main characters, this iconic action series managed to capture a wave of success once again. Netflix's Cobra Kai became the most significant example of this transformation, garnering great interest from both critics and audiences.

Although the first Karate Kid film followed a familiar "underdog" story, it made a significant impact and paved the way for many sequels. The second film also proved itself as a valuable extension of the original story. However, with the third film, the momentum of the series began to slow down. A new remake starring Hilary Swank emerged as an attempt to rekindle interest, but it failed to create the expected impact.

Cobra Kai revitalized the Karate Kid series by making the villain from the 1984 film, Johnny Lawrence, the main character. This change completely altered the dynamics of the story and presented Johnny's journey of redemption to the audience. The series reinterpreted the familiar underdog story by adding new young characters whose lives were transformed by karate.

One of the most notable features of Cobra Kai was its lack of a clear villain in the early seasons. Even John Kreese was portrayed not as a one-dimensional villain but as a character with moral complexity. While exploring the rivalry between the two main karate dojos, the series offered viewers the chance to support both dojos. While presenting Johnny Lawrence as a new hero, it did not depict Daniel LaRusso in a negative light; instead, it highlighted the flaws and redemption potentials of both characters.

The finale of Cobra Kai provided Johnny Lawrence with the long-deserved redemption, remaining consistent with the show's earlier episodes. Successfully establishing its own identity while not shying away from utilizing the strong elements of the Karate Kid series, Cobra Kai perfectly blended nostalgia with innovative storytelling. This success continued with a new Karate Kid film titled Karate Kid: Legends, but this film also seems to have fallen into the traps of its predecessors.
