Kaitlin Olson knows that "High Potential" viewers want savant consultant Morgan Gillory to be with LAPD detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata). However, after two successful seasons of this dramedy that has topped ratings across many platforms, Olson is quite pleased to stretch this slow-burning love story for years to come. The actress also serves as a producer.

The personal story arc of this season is inspired by viewers asking the question, "Will Morgan and Karadec end up together or not?" Olson explains in an interview with Variety, "I found that really funny. You can’t just jump into that because then what do you do? No one knows what will happen in the future. Instead, we started from the idea, 'What if they were both involved with different people?'" As Karadec reconnects with his ex-fiancée Lucia (Susan Kelechi Watson), Morgan finds herself facing the new head of the Major Crimes Division, Nick Wagner (Steve Howey). Although Morgan and Wagner initially clash, in the next episode, Wagner provides closure by capturing the gang of thieves that killed his ex-fiancée. As they leave the precinct at night, Wagner impulsively kisses Morgan in the elevator, opening the door to a workplace romance.

The season finale brings a dramatic turn of events. Morgan and Karadec's investigation into a death at a hotel courtyard in Los Angeles leads to the arrest of Lucia, who works as a guest relations consultant. Lucia confesses to warning and protecting a drug-dealing con artist and having a reality show host killed. After Morgan points to Lucia as a suspect, an angry Karadec shows up at Morgan's door to apologize, leading to an emotional conversation between the two partners.

Meanwhile, Wagner contacts his opportunistic father Willa Quinn (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and introduces Morgan to a shadowy political consultant linked to the disappearance of Morgan's ex-boyfriend Roman, who went missing 15 years ago. At the end of the finale, while attending his daughter Ava's (Amirah J) art exhibition, Morgan receives a call from Wagner. Wagner mentions he will meet someone in a public park. However, when Morgan arrives at the park to confront that person, she finds only Wagner, who has been shot. As the screen fades to black, Morgan is left grappling with the regret that her investigation may have led to the death of someone she loves. Olson states, "Now it’s not just about wondering what happens to her and her daughter. It’s also potentially putting the people she cares about in danger."
