Joseph Kosinski's upcoming Miami Vice film has officially been introduced under the title "Miami Vice '85," with Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler signing on to a project that has been in discussions for a long time. Jordan will take on the role of Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, while Butler will portray James "Sonny" Crockett. The film, set to be released by Universal Pictures, is planned to hit theaters on August 6, 2027.

Kosinski's project is inspired by the pilot episode and the first season of the iconic 1980s police series. Unlike Michael Mann's 2006 Miami Vice film, Miami Vice '85 will be a period piece set in the atmosphere of the 1980s. The original series was created by Anthony Yerkovich and aired on NBC from 1984 to 1990, featuring two undercover police officers known for their stylish pastel suits.

Michael B. Jordan is an Oscar-winning actor known for his roles in successful productions like Black Panther, Creed III, and Sinners. He will also direct, star in, and produce a reimagined version of The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM. Austin Butler portrayed Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis film and has appeared in Dune: Part Two, The Bikeriders, and Masters of the Air, and will also be featured in the upcoming A24 crime thriller Enemies.

Kosinski is a successful filmmaker who has directed blockbuster films like Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie. The production of Miami Vice '85 will begin this year, with the director set to capture the glamorous and corrupt sides of Miami in the mid-1980s. It has been reported that Kosinski will shoot this film using Imax cameras, just like he did with F1 and Top Gun: Maverick.
