Johnny Depp's New Film Revives 25-Year Partnership
Screen Rant
Johnny Depp is making a comeback with a new film project that reunites him with a longtime collaborator. This will be Depp's first major project in Hollywood after an eight-year hiatus. Following a lengthy absence from projects due to high-profile legal battles with his ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp took on a role in the French film Jeanne du Barry (2023) after winning a defamation case in 2022 and provided voice work for the animated film Johnny Puff: Secret Mission (2024). However, fans have been eagerly awaiting Depp's official return to Hollywood.
It seems that the big moment has finally arrived. Depp will star in the action thriller Day Drinker, directed by Marc Webb and written by Zach Dean. Depp will portray Kelly, the owner of a private yacht. Kelly meets a bartender named Lorna (Madelyn Cline), and the two unexpectedly become connected as they are drawn into the world of organized crime. The figure behind the chaos is the criminal Cara Lauzzana, played by Penélope Cruz in Day Drinker.
Cruz's role in Day Drinker is an exciting element, given her status as a major star. Additionally, the anticipation is heightened by the fact that Cruz and Depp have previously collaborated on several film projects. Depp's return to Hollywood will mark the fourth film featuring this duo; the previous three films are Blow (2001), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), and Murder on the Orient Express (2017).
The longstanding professional relationship between the stars of Day Drinker is quite promising. This indicates that there won't be any issues with romantic or other types of chemistry in the film. When Depp and Cruz's new film hits theaters on March 25, 2027, it will have been 26 years since the two worked together on Blow. Blow was a moderate commercial success, grossing $83 million worldwide upon its release in 2001, and holds an audience score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. This suggests that general audiences appreciated the chemistry between Depp and Cruz.
